Special Design Features/Comments: This new museum building consists of approximately 30,000 s.f. of gallery space, library, rare book room, auditorium, administrative offices, shop and café. This project required highly sensitive environmental control, which is vital to the collections’ ongoing preservation.
Main liaison on behalf of the Owner between the design and construction teams. We had overall responsibility for the management of the time, cost, quality and administration aspects of the project. The project was carried out using a public/private initiative.
Since opening to the public, the building has been highly acclaimed by the architectural press in the U.S. and internationally. The project was delivered on time and under budget. The New York Times architectural critic, Herbert Muschamp, wrote on December 14, 2001, “We can stop waiting for state officials to produce plans for redeveloping the City’s Financial District. The rebuilding of New York has already begun. The New American Folk Art Museum in midtown, is a bighearted building. And its heart is in the right time as well as the right place. The 19th century philosophy of ‘truth to materials’ is applied more consistently here than in buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright. I see the building’s flaring facade as the wings of my personal holiday angel. It tops my New York tree.” This project has been awarded the best cultural building and best overall building in the world for 2001 by World Architecture Magazine. This project has also received a 2003 AIA National Honor Award for excellence in Architecture, Interiors, and Urban Design.
