Special Design Features/Comments: This new museum building includes 18,000 square feet of cantilevered column-free gallery space. Its 62,000 square feet of glass and metal consists of the gallery, which cantilevers 75 feet towards the water, an education center, restaurant, café, an outdoor amphitheater and a corresponding performing arts theater. The theater slopes out of the underside of the cantilever so that the glass background behind the performers provides waterfront views to the audience.
The building opened to very positive architectural press reviews in December 2006. The building has been awarded the AIA Honor Award for 2007.
