The Center for Fiction, which is descended from the Mercantile Library, was founded in 1820 as the oldest private library in New York City, and moved from Midtown Manhattan to the Brooklyn Cultural District. The Center houses a bookstore, a café, a multipurpose auditorium and reading room to hold events and host programs. The library is housed throughout the facility and provides members with access to the Center’s unique historical and specialist collections of books. The Center offers its members and writers a public home to meet, write and read in a quiet contemplative space and for the public to participate in its programs.
